Is it better to know the hidden dangers in advance?
This painting was inspired by the Daisy, the great white shark that was tracked for while in and around the Bay of Plenty region and who liked to hang about in Tauranga Harbour.
Knowing where she was located wasn’t altogether reassuring and stopped me from taking small, calculated risks. It made me second guess every jump off the boat, every swim to the shore. A fall from a paddle board would make me think of Daisy and the jaws soundtrack would start playing in my head.
Her tracking tag fell off a while back - and where she is now remains a mystery. I’m relieved.
How many times have you achieved something you’ve been immensely proud of, but when you look back on it, you might say ‘I’d never have done it if I had known how hard it was going to be.’ But at the time, you didn’t know about the hidden dangers. And so you did the thing. And left your mark.
I think a little mystery is a good thing.
